We are playing about 41 lands where 2 of them don’t produce mana (unless we have Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth on the battlefield). If we want to take value from our commander we need to level up our lands count more than it’s usual because we are able to play an extra land each turn and we have to sacrifice one of them at the beginning of our upkeep. Our strategy is focused on this mechanism. From this dredge mechanism we will keep triggering extra draws from lands which will allow us to use more dredge effects. We want to take the maximum value from Gitrog’s ability and to do that there is nothing better than the dredge mechanism that allow us to put a tons of cards into our graveyard. We have to emphasize that his last ability triggers whenever a land is put into our graveyard from anywhere which means that those lands may come from every zone and not exclusively from the battlefield.ĭrawing cards is a very important part of commander and The Gitrog Monster is a draw engine that can do it well, maybe better than you may think. First of all he has an upkeep effect that forces us to sacrifice one land unless we sacrifice him which, at the first look, may look a little bit frustrating because nobody wants to lose lands however he has an “ exploration” ability that allows us to drop one extra land on each turn and, the most important ability, he makes us to draw an extra card whenever a land is put into our graveyard from anywhere.
The Gitrog Monster is a 5 mana 6/6 with Deathtouch which seems to be bigger than it’s usual for his mana cost however, he has some other abilities that turn him on a really special commander.
